Free GeoGuessr alternatives: 12 games like GeoGuessr, checked

Updated October 22, 2026 · 12 games, each checked on its maker's site · 8 min read

GeoGuessr drops you somewhere on Google Street View and asks where you are. You read the road signs, the language, the plants and the cars, then pin your guess on a world map; five rounds make a game, and a perfect one scores 25,000. Since early 2024 most of it has been behind a subscription. Today the free part on the web is one Daily Challenge of five locations, with a free account, and unlimited play costs from $3.99 a month on a yearly plan.

That is why most people looking for games like GeoGuessr want free ones. The first picks below use the same real Street View imagery with no paywall; after them come games that swap Street View for photos, videos or a blank map but test the same instinct for places. Each pick says exactly what is free, as its maker's site showed it on the day we checked.

How we picked

We judged every game on the questions a GeoGuessr player asks: do I guess a real place from what I see, how is the guess scored, what does it cost to keep playing, and do I need an account? Each pick was looked up on its maker's site on October 22, 2026; we read the pricing and help pages and checked how a round works.

We left out sites that reuse the GeoGuessr name or copy another game's name to catch searches, "unblocked" mirrors, and anything that needs a download from a source we could not trace to its maker. Our ratings, out of 5, count how much of the GeoGuessr experience you get without paying as heavily as the quality of the game.

3 of the 12 are games we make, marked Made by us · Gamefinity. They are rated on the same scale as the rest and placed where they honestly fit.

What it is

A free browser and mobile game built on Google Street View: look around a panorama, then click the map where you think it is, and score by distance. It has unlimited singleplayer on the world map or on tens of thousands of community maps, ranked one-on-one duels, two-on-two team duels, a country guesser and a daily challenge of three locations.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

It is the closest free match to GeoGuessr's main loop: the same real Street View imagery, the same pin-and-distance scoring, and the same headline modes, duels, community maps and a shared daily.

What's different

Everything is free and paid for by ads, and singleplayer works without an account (ranked play needs one). It is made by one developer rather than a company, and the daily is three locations instead of five.

What it is

A free browser game of random Google Street View panoramas: you pin where you think each one was taken. Built as a one-day prototype in 2023, it found millions of players in early 2024 and has been rebuilt and updated since. It has multiplayer lobbies, ranked duels, a daily competition, tournaments, community maps and extra modes such as a country guesser and an image guesser.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

Real Street View, a map pin, distance scoring, duels and community maps: the parts of GeoGuessr most people mean when they say they miss playing it.

What's different

Its makers say no feature should be restricted to paying users, and multiplayer lobbies work with no account at all, which makes it easy to start a game with a group. Twists like grayscale and blink modes are its own.

The real thing, once a day

What it is

The free part of GeoGuessr itself: one shared set of five Street View locations a day, the same for everyone, with streaks you keep by playing before the reset. It became free again in April 2026 after GeoGuessr ended free play in 2024. It resets on Central European Time for everyone.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

It is GeoGuessr, with its maps, its scoring and its polish. If you only want a taste each day, this costs nothing.

What's different

One five-location game a day on a map GeoGuessr chooses, played solo. You need a free account, and custom maps, duels, parties and unlimited play need Pro ($3.99 a month billed yearly, or $6.99 monthly) or Elite.

Players who like busy streets

What it is

A guessing game made in 2020 that plays real walking and driving videos of cities instead of Street View. You pick a map, such as Worldwide, USA, Europe or Japan, watch the streets go by and click the map to name the city. Streak modes, private multiplayer servers and no-moving or time-limit challenges are built in.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

You read the same clues GeoGuessr players live for, licence plates, scripts, shop signs and which side of the road cars drive on, then pin your answer on a map. Its makers say it was inspired by GeoGuessr.

What's different

Video instead of panoramas means moving traffic and people, which some clues come from, and it is about cities rather than random roadsides. It is free and needs no account.

A one-minute daily map test

What it is

Five places a day, the same for everyone, announced on a split-flap departures board: Paris, Machu Picchu, Lake Baikal, Ulaanbaatar. You drop a pin on a world map stripped of every label, showing just coastlines, lakes and faint borders, and a dashed flight path shows how many kilometres off you were. The five run from easy to hard.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

It is the final step of every GeoGuessr round, placing a pin on an unlabelled map, made into a game of its own and scored by distance on the curve of the Earth. Once enough people have played, you also see whether you beat the crowd's average pin.

What's different

There is no imagery to read: you are told the place and the country and must know where it sits. A whole day takes about a minute rather than a quarter of an hour.

History and geography fans

What it is

Each round shows a real historical photograph; you pin where it was taken and set the year, scoring for being close on both. A standard game is five rounds, and there are a daily game, random games, community games, an archive of past dailies and real-time one-on-one matches.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

You work out a location from an image and pin it on a world map, scored by distance, with a daily and head-to-head play, so the core of a GeoGuessr round is all there.

What's different

Still photos from the past instead of today's Street View, and the year is half the score, so knowing history matters as much as knowing roads.

Learning the map that GeoGuessr tests

What it is

More than 400 map quizzes on countries, capitals, flags, rivers and mountains, started in 1997 and owned by GeoGuessr since 2022. You click or type the place named until the map is complete, racing the clock. The quizzes and printable maps on the website are free, and the full iPhone app is free with no ads.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

Made by the same company, it trains the knowledge every GeoGuessr player leans on: where countries, regions and capitals actually are.

What's different

It is a labelled-map quiz with no Street View and no guessing from clues. Ads show on the free website, and creating challenges needs GeoGuessr Pro.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

Street View rounds with map pins, multiplayer lobbies and daily challenges, built for the same players and the same competitive streak.

What's different

There is no subscription: ads are on by default and switch off once your donations cover your costs. You need an account to create games or play the dailies, and guests can only join by link.

What it is

A daily puzzle from the makers of Worldle: one real photograph, and you pin where it was taken. The older Classic version asks for the country from the photo, then adds three bonus rounds.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

Guessing a real place from a picture of it and pinning it on a map is a single GeoGuessr round, served once a day.

What's different

One still photo instead of a panorama you can move around, and the archive of past puzzles needs a Teuteuf premium plan.

Learning flags properly

What it is

A country is named and you colour its flag from memory on an empty outline: pick a paint, tap the stripe or shape it belongs to, then submit. It covers all 195 countries in their true shades, with three lives and no clock, in an Easy and a Hard mode.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

Flags on buildings, cars and signs are one of the most reliable clues in a GeoGuessr round. Painting them from memory makes them stick far better than recognising them.

What's different

It is a flag quiz, not a location game: no maps or imagery, and you are told the country rather than finding it.

Quick capital-city drills

What it is

A country appears with four capital cities to choose from, and you race a 90-second clock that loses three seconds for every wrong answer. It starts with famous capitals and moves to obscure ones from every continent, and later questions flip around and name a capital instead.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

Knowing capitals helps you place big-city rounds and read road signs that point to them. It is fast map knowledge, the kind GeoGuessr players build over time.

What's different

Multiple choice with no map or imagery, and it covers 166 countries, leaving out those whose capital is disputed or split.

Exploring and practising at your own pace

What it is

A random Street View teleporter online since about 2010. Press Go and you land somewhere new, optionally limited to chosen countries, with urban and indoor options. Its Stealth option hides the address so you can guess first and reveal after.

Why it's like GeoGuessr

It is the raw material of GeoGuessr: random real Street View locations, ready for you to read the road and decide where you are.

What's different

It is not a scored game: there is no map pin, no points and no multiplayer, so you keep score in your head. It suits practice and wandering rather than competition.

Where to start

If you want GeoGuessr's main game for free, start with WorldGuessr, and use OpenGuessr when friends want to join without making accounts. Keep GeoGuessr's own Daily Challenge as your daily habit, and if you want to get better rather than just play more, an evening of Seterra quizzes on the regions you keep missing does more than a week of random rounds.

Questions people ask

Is GeoGuessr free?

Partly. On the web, the Daily Challenge of five locations a day is free with a free account, and the Steam Edition has free Quickplay Duels. Everything else, including unlimited play, custom maps and parties, needs Pro ($3.99 a month billed yearly, or $6.99 monthly) or Elite ($5.99 a month billed yearly, or $10.99 monthly), as listed on GeoGuessr's pricing page on October 22, 2026.

What is the best free GeoGuessr alternative?

WorldGuessr and OpenGuessr both use real Google Street View with unlimited free rounds, duels and community maps, paid for by ads. WorldGuessr leans towards solo and ranked play; OpenGuessr makes it easy to play with friends without accounts.

Why did GeoGuessr stop being free?

GeoGuessr ended free play in early 2024 and made a membership necessary to play. In April 2026 it made the Daily Challenge free again for everyone with an account, but the rest of the game still needs a subscription.

Are there GeoGuessr alternatives without Google Street View?

Yes. City Guesser uses videos of real streets, TimeGuessr and WhereTaken use photographs, and Pin Drop asks you to place named places on a blank map. They test the same sense of where things are without panoramas.

Who owns GeoGuessr?

GeoGuessr AB, a company in Stockholm, Sweden. It was created by Anton Wallén and released in 2013, and the same company owns the Seterra map quizzes.

Can I play a GeoGuessr-like game in class?

Several free options work in a classroom, from Seterra's free quizzes to Street View games that need no student accounts. Our page on GeoGuessr for classrooms goes through what each needs.
